INVESTIGATE OPTIONS
Now that you have analyzed yourself and long term goals you are ready to begin exploring new jobs and what that position actually involves. Three steps to start you on the path for a successful job change include:
  • Research/Reading
  • Begin researching careers by using several sources. You can go to the library and read any one of many books on specific careers: what they involve, what are the requirements for that position, salary expectations and what the predictions are for the future in that particular job segment.

The internet provides you with unlimited resources for researching a position. Start by entering the description of the job that is of interest to you. You will find many different sources and an abundance of information in your field of interest.

  • Discuss your options
  • Most commonly referred to as Networking. Create a list of individuals that you know that may be able to assist you by sharing their information and views on their personal experience in a specific job segment.

Networking opportunities include: relatives, friends, a former employer or a contact you have retained from: college, high school or vocational school. For example a counselor, a professor, teacher or instructor.

Be prepared to ask when it would be convenient for the individual to meet with you. Prepare for the meeting in order that you properly utilize this person's time.

Once you have completed your meeting be sure to formally thank the individual. Keep them posted as to your success in finding a new job. This will help to build your network for the future.

  • Take Action
  • Now that you have followed the above steps there is one more critical step when launching your job search. When you find a job that is of interest to you it is critical you do your research on the company. Go to their website and read the company’s: mission statement, accomplishments, sales revenue and community service endeavors. Gain as much knowledge as you can about their product or services they sell/provide. By doing so you will be able to use this information when composing your cover letter or online response when applying for the job.
