STEPS TO A SUCCESSFUL INTERVIEW
Preparation
- Now that you have secured an interview, conduct a more detailed search and analysis of the company.
- Prepare for the interview
- Create a list of key points about yourself that relate directly to the position
- Review your resume and be certain you are prepared to answer any and all questions regarding the statements you made.
- Anticipate the key questions that you will be presented with, e.g., why are you qualified for this position, why do you want this job, determine your strengths and weaknesses in order to discuss them openly and honestly.
Practice
The interviewer will immediately form his/her opinion. The moment you walk in the door you begin to make your impression with your verbal and non-verbal communications. The interviewer will assess your: self-confidence, dress, communication skills and your over-all personality.
- Make sure you speak clearly and distinctly. Proper grammar is critical. Avoid words or phrases such as: well uh, like, maybe and you know. The next two will be a bit more difficult because they have become commonplace. Pronounce the complete word, e.g., you are not "goin" but you are going, secondly try not end your sentences in prepositions, e.g., don't say "where is the job located at" but rather, "where is the job located."
- During the interviewing process your mannerisms will tell the interviewer a great deal about you. Watch your facial expressions. Remain calm and do not fidget.
- Learn to be comfortable about yourself. Do not be afraid to identify a weakness you possess. You will gain the respect of the individual conducting the interview by being honest.
Performance
During the interviewing process your main goal is to emphasize how you will meet or exceed the expectations of the employer.
- Often times it helps “to break the ice.” When you walk into the interviewer’s office look around quickly and see if there is a common interest you share. For example if he/she appear to be a sports fan direct the conversation in that direction for a few minutes and then let the interviewer set the pace.
- Articulate your accomplishments and experiences.
- Be relaxed and smile;this will demonstrate self-confidence.
- Look for signs that the interviewer is feeling comfortable with you. This is a good sign that the interview is going well and will further help to relax you.
Follow Up
It is imperative you send a formal letter to the interviewer on a timely basis thanking him or her for the opportunity to meet with them. Reiterate your interest in the position.
